Geoff Donnan Wins William Feinberg Award for Excellence in Clinical Stroke

The American Stroke Association has presented the William Feinberg Award for Excellence in Clinical Stroke to:

Geoffrey A. Donnan, M.D., director of the National Stroke Research Institute and the Department of Neurology at the University of Melbourne in Australia.

The Feinberg Award, honors “significant achievement in the clinical investigation and management of stroke.”

“Professor Donnan’s research has helped refine the use of diffusion and perfusion-weighted imaging in selecting and monitoring patients for thrombolytic therapy.  He was involved in the original descriptive work identifying several unique clinical syndromes, including:

  • the Capsular Warning Syndrome, a subtype of warning stroke characterized by recurrent episodes affecting the face, arms or legs, without cortical symptoms; and
  • Striatocapsular infarction, a type of subcortical stroke that often affects the upper limb.”
