Professor Donnan wins prestigious BGRF Medal“Professor Geoffrey Donnan, has been awarded this year’s Bethlehem Griffiths Research Foundation (BGRF) medal. The medal honours Professor Donnan’s extraordinary career spanning 30 years as a neurologist and researcher, and his contribution to the field of stroke research and management in Australia and internationally. As founder and director of the National Stroke Research Institute, Professor Donnan leads major research trials into the prevention and treatment of stroke. His team’s groundbreaking research into the use of brain imaging technology has enabled clot-dissolving agents to be used to treat stroke sufferers. This treatment has improved the chances of a complete recovery to an additional 30 per cent of stroke patients that previously faced permanent incapacitation. “This work will make it possible for more people to recover from serious stroke,” said Professor Donnan. “The challenge is to extend the efficacy of existing medication beyond the current short three hour time limit so more people can actually walk away from stroke.” Media Release from Austin Health Weekly Staff Newsletter “Week At a Glance” - Monday 14 th July 2008 For more information see Media Release from Bethlehem Griffiths Research Foundation
